Depressed Celebs, Hit the Low Note
Psychologists claim that any kind of life extreme whether it is super wealth or fame exacerbates mental crises such as de panic attacks and lack of confidence. In other words, the more successful you are the more prone to depression you could be. Take a popular celeb, they often feel guilty for succeeding, continually pace their success or compare themselves to other celebs making it difficult to focus on the simpler things of life like hanging out with the kids.. “Sometimes there are conflicts about identity,” says Essig a well-known psychologist. For example, one high flyer told him the greater his success, “the less I feel like myself.’”
Super young movie star Jennifer Lawrence admits to suffering from a “kind of” social anxiety. She told the New York Times. That she only manages to find peace by thinking of her public image as a sort of avatar self. “You out there can have the avatar me. I can keep me. And I just try to acknowledge that this scrutiny is stressful, and that anyone would find it stressful!”
Emma Stone is an Emmy nominated young actress who has suffered from panic attacks ever since she was a kid. “The first time I had a panic attack I was sitting in my friend’s house, and I thought the house was burning down,” she told the Wall Street Journal. “I called my mom and she brought me home, and for the next three years it just would not stop!”
In Stone’s case acting helps her cope. “There’s something about the immediacy of acting,” she said. “You can’t afford to think about a million other things. You have to think about the task at hand. Acting forces me to sort of be like a Zen master: focusing on what is happening right in this moment?”
Johnny Depp has always battled with anxiety and depression. It surfaces on talk shows. He looks shy and feels uncomfortable; his facial expressions often convey his stress.
Depp makes sure he has therapists on hand to advise on how to deal with his angst, but it still seeps through his body language during a face to face.
Scarlett Johansson recently admitted that she suffers from panic attacks and just hates red carpet events; she comes out in a sweat and her heart races the moment she is in the spotlight. Adele,. like Scarlett is not afraid to say she suffers from severe stage fright and anxiety attacks.
“I’m scared of audiences,” she told Rolling Stone Magazine “During one show in Amsterdam I was so nervous, I escaped out the fire exit. I’ve thrown up a couple of times. Once in Brussels, I projectile-vomited on someone. I just gotta bear it. But I don’t like touring. I have anxiety attacks a lot.”
Celebrities are human like us, they might be gifted but often do not understand why they have been so lucky, successful and popular. They could feel guilty about receiving awards, and attracting so much attention. They could also find handling fame and the power that comes with it nerve racking and scary. However, some celebs have managed to compromise with fame, and have found ways to handle the fall out.
Even though she is often in the eye of some publicity storm Angelina Jolie deals with her stress by sitting on the floor with the kids colouring for an hour, or going on the trampoline. “You do something you love, that makes you happy, and that gives you peace!” she said.
Russell Brand told the Los Angeles Times’ Ministry of Gossip that he meditates. “It connects you to a source of energy that’s more powerful than the material world in which we primarily dwell. It helps you relax and unwind.”
Madonna goes to the edge to de-stress! She told Good Housekeeping Magazine “Actually, I scream a lot I guess sometimes I handle things well, sometimes I don’t”.
Brad Pitt deals with angst by allowing his mind to go to architecture. He told Parade Magazine ”I walk around the yard and start thinking about what I need to do to the house structurally. It’s similar to puzzles in that way, like a crossword puzzle or anything else I can put my mind into. It’s a relief for me”,
Kate Winslett told Good Housekeeping “I plan everything in advance, who’s dropping off the kids, who’s picking up. We have charts, maps and lists on the fridge, all over the house. I sometimes feel like I’m with the CIA.”
Each celebrity has their own way of handling stress, if not that inner crack could widen and like Judy Garland, Mel Gibson, and Whitney Houston they could crash and burn! Not everyone can survive the demands of celebrity-hood.
