Joel Dommett
SANDRA BULLOCK AT THE END OF GRAVITY
“I’m so happy; I feel like Sandra Bullock at the end of Gravity; I’m so happy to make everyone proud.’
So, who is laughing? Could it be Joel Dommett … and his own jokes? Mentioning the silliness of the “Masked Dancer’s” new series to Davina Mccall she giggled back “Can I just say one thing, Joel’s trousers are even tighter” Joel was clearly enjoying the Davina buzz; he is a buzzy guy.
Some call Joel the comedian’s comedian. Certainly, he is of a new funny brigade, the type of absurd that an older generation, brought up by Peter Sellers and Robin Williams, might not understand.
SQUEEZING YOUR SHAME
The website “Moody Comedy” was naturally curious about the man and asked him a few baseline questions as is he easily embarrassed’?
“I used to be but comedy tends to squeeze your shame into a tiny corner of your brain and you only get it out on very rare occasions.”
Okay, so what about the weather? What type of weather does he, as they insisted?
“Probably sunny times. Unless I happen to be in a paddling pool on top of a hill; in that case, it’s thunder and lightning. Exhilarating.”
So, did this off-the-wall, out-of-the-box comic ever love school?
He told Moody Comedy, “Yes. For the most part. Once a guy threatened me and said that tomorrow he was going to fight me. I went home, made a 24-minute video of me doing nunchucks in my garden, put it on VHS then sent it through his letter box. On the front, in black marker pen, it said, “This is what I’m capable of”. It didn’t work.
Joel revels in situations that do not work.
DEFYING THE LAW OF GRAVITY
His Sun in Gemini and his Moon in Aquarius show he is so out of the box that he defies the law of gravity. In fact, going against the grain is how he bears life’s hard knocks He is versatile and unique; anybody’s way is not his. He gets his laughs by picking on original absurdities; he knows he is part of the Matrix and happily presses the red pill and blue pill buttons in quick succession, probably as a result of his skew-whiff view of existence. His life is a running narrative of Gemini style, never-ending chats, Aquarius “of the planet” musings and journeys into the realms of complete idiocy as his perplexed guardian angel constantly reminds him to be unafraid of laughing at his own jokes. Now, this might sound weird, but he did tell The Times he enjoyed unusual situations, especially when he travelled with Nish Kumar for the show “Joel and Nish vs the World!”
During the first episode, he went to Mongolia.. “before we knew it, we were in the middle of nowhere,” and then suddenly, they met a few of the locals.
“They brought out what I thought were shortbread biscuits. Of course, I grabbed one and shoved it straight into my mouth. It was a lump of yak’s milk cheese, the strongest-smelling, hardest cheese I’d ever tasted. Spitting it out would have been rude, so I spent the next hour waiting for this thing to dissolve in my mouth, then took part in a wrestling contest where I was beaten up by a 15-year-old.”
IT’S NOT ME; IT’S THEM
Joel has laughed more than once at the audience on many a TV show. But he had to work hard at success. He moved to London at 19, where he gained experience in minor acting roles in Teenage Kicks, Casualty and the Golden Hours. But his first stand-up gig was in a Los Angeles Bar. From then on, he edged his way around the fairground of life’s rich patterns and even managed to joke about the Royals without being boring.
Indeed, Joel does not lack talking points. He released his memories of “It’s Not Me, It’s Them” in 2018. The book explains how he had to go through forty different romances before he met his soul mate and future wife Hannah Cooper. They are both convinced having separate bathrooms is the secret to their happy marriage.
Jupiter in Aquarius seals the deal! How hilarious is that? Nothing could be. It is just a question of that big JJ in the sky accessing his muse and shaking hands with Joel over a curry.
