However, often the reason they ran away in the first place is to do with some fundamental dysfunction in terms of domestic relationships. Mum or dad might drink, in fact asking how is my mum, of a counsellor or empath could be based on concern for their mother’s health, and guilt that they are not there, looking after her.

Runaways

Sometimes runaways were the family carers, tired out by responsibilities at a young age. They could have been abused, perhaps even sexually, and they might have picked up on their parents’ substance abuse habits. They will often feel different, left out, confused and panicked. Home does not feel like home, and they want to get away from the pain and suffering they are subjected to there. Some runaways might even be crystal children, therefore super intuitive and telepathic. They could have a strong interest in God, yet be shy and withdrawn. They would love crystals and rocks, vibrant colours and seek out peace in their lives. Therefore they will feel deeply sensitive to any emotional shifts around them. They are very fragile, and yet strong and able to contend with difficulties. So they will look for solutions, and often that solution will be to run away from an unloving and abusive home.

Fifty percent of all runaways have difficulties at school, and they could have even dropped out or have been suspended. How vulnerable they must feel, how alone when their teachers and school friends turn away. How disapproved of and how panicked they would be to prefer to run away rather than feel “out on a limb” in their own environments, with nobody to care or counsel them. Asking how is my mum therefore demonstrates, to a therapist or counsellor, that a child desperately needs love, and wants the attention and nurturing they deserve even though sadly they will not always get it from their emotional disturbed mothers.

The main problem is that runaways live on the street. Street children survive in bands, often in crumbling and unsafe buildings. They can sleep on park benches, and beg for money. They are usually in severe danger, and may be the subject of sexual exploitation.

Healers

Reiki healers and spiritual empaths reach out to children in these circumstances. They know how deeply a small child can feel the pain of abandonment. How alone they can be. Children don’t always know how to express their fearful emotions, therefore a lost child out on the street, needs both physical protection and spiritual protection. Some Reiki and spiritual healers put themselves at the disposition of the authorities to help abandoned children and guide them to the correct healing sources.

Some distant healers get together to form circles of healing light only for destitute children, and send those healing vibes through to them with distant healing Reiki symbols or other techniques. Some alternative healers, like Ann Adams, work in residential treatment programmes for severely disturbed children, and bring in techniques like EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) which is a physical and spiritual healing module, to heal trauma and sexual abuse. Music therapy does work well with children also, and they can then go deeper into their therapeutic work as a result.

Darline Hunter

Darline Hunter Ed.D is an American therapist who works with damaged children from a spiritual perspective. The results of leading children to understand concepts like God, Universal Love and empathy have worked wonders. She says “their self esteem increases, they feel empowered, they have a belief system to count on, they have hope, they articulate their dreams, and follow them and they begin to ask “What is it I might give?'” rather than “What is it I might get?” When people focus on what they can get from a situation they feel empty. Encouraging kids to operate instead from a giving perspective, helps them think outside of themselves and connect with others.”

How is my mum
might still seem a very pertinent question in such circumstances. Because every child needs their mother’s love to grow strong and sure of themselves. In that context healers can help, especially those in the psycho therapeutic or medical fields who integrate spirituality into their practice. Nothing could be more fulfilling to see a lost child smile again. Nothing could be more joyful than to see a mother and her child reunite, heal and find space for their relationship to flower.
