Haunted Houses
So you probably have heard of a haunted house! What exactly is one and how does it become haunted. It is usually because of someone that has not left the earthly plane and is stuck here and doesn’t know how to get to the spiritual plane. They move around the place and people can see them. It can be quite a frightening experience if you don’t understand what is going on but it is rather sad too because these people were all human beings at one time and had ordinary lives like all of us. Something traumatic probably happened to them at some point and their life ended, usually suddenly and without warning and then they are trapped in that place until someone shows them how to step into the light. There are quite a few haunted houses in England and I will give you a brief insight into some of them. In the East Midlands in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, The Hind restaurant, apparently at around 11pm if the lights are off, a small child can be heard crying. A grey lady haunts one of the turrets in the library at Walworth Castle in Darlington, Northumbria. Years ago a lady who owned the castle became pregnant with the stable boy and disgraced her family. She was locked up in the castle turrets and now haunts the library and room 16. If you’re feeling really brave then why not head for Langsmead House, in Thame, Oxfordshire where a male spirit – heavy footsteps and clearing of his throat – are often heard. Some visitors have also reported a figure dressed as an army officer standing right next to their bed. You can rent an apartment through Whitby Cottages, which sleeps up to 6 people and has gorgeous views over the river Esk, Endeavour Dock and upper harbour. This town has Dracula, Bram Stoker and gothic connections. Then there is Borley Rectory, quite a well known haunting occurs there. The most popular story of Borley was that in 1362 Monks built a monastery on the site, which would later hold the rectory. Legend told of a nun from the Bures convent falling in love with a monk from the monastery. They decided to elope to be together, but their elders discovered their plans. A friend of the monk was to drive a carriage to help them escape. On that fateful night they were captured by their elders and the coachman was beheaded, the monk hanged and the nun was bricked up alive in the walls of the vaults beneath the rectory. Their ghosts have haunted the site ever since. And the list goes on, I am sure that in every town in England there is a haunted house and if you go to your local library then I am sure that you will find something of interest for your particular town.
